What is the difference between record labels & DIY (Kickstarter etc.) when it comes to having cover songs on a Dollyrots album? Is it more difficult than split albums with BFS?
In both cases, royalties still have to be paid out to the original songwriter. If a label or publisher isn't doing that on your behalf that becomes the band's responsibility to make sure that happens. The difference is that, by being independent, we don't have to have a label agree with us about what we choose to cover...AND we can be a part of whatever splits or comps we choose to be a part of without a label claiming ownership of our work. Hope that all makes sense!
